Bryneven Primary Lesson: On Off Switches in Purple Mash with Grade 3
A very ambitious 14th of November with Bryneven Primary School Grade 3 Lesson; it explores using the 'on or off' switch -with a 'zero or one' being assigned to a variable. This number variable helps to keep track of when the switch is either on or off. The lesson indicate that the variable should be named appropriately, as this assists one to make sense of one's code. We introduced the 'if else condition' using the white background, to show an on condition. The variable is given a one (number variable) to show a switch from the off state to on. The 'else part' of the condition provides an understanding of a state of not off i.e., designating that the switch is on. Mr Bradley teaches for the Gauteng Department of Education. Erin Bradley at Bryneven: Linking with Purple Mash
Today's Bryneven Primary School lesson returned to explore our HTML code, built in the text editor, Notepad. We engaged with 2Simple's activities that we used to feed our web pages. Bryneven's coding group looked at saving our HTML files in folders; these were called “first” and “second”. We used each of these HTML (hypertext markup language files) to link -using an image element within an anchor. Our lesson referred back to some shortcut and quick methods of our earlier lessons e.g., shift + right click. We used an animated GIF file, created in Purple Mash’s 2Animate. Then we explored the process of creating the animation file; we exported the animation to the computer's download folder. We note that the default naming convention is with the GIF extension. This animated GIF file’s address (location) was then placed in the image element — within the anchor. In the other complementing HTML file we placed another anchor- with some text. At this point, both of the files then became linked with hyperlinks. By clicking on the animated GIF file we were navigating to the other HTML file. We moved between the two -to press the point i.e., seeing the connection. This was an interesting lesson — though it held some difficulty for the younger learners. We placed the HTML code in the coding group’s blog. This posting in the block allowed learners to be able to concentrate solely on the mechanics and techniques of file location in the 'href' and 'src' properties of the anchor, as well as the image element. Exploration with 10 year olds: Animation and with Purple Mash
Bryneven Primary School's Mr Bradley provides another lesson. The study exploring the basic technique of tracing in animation; our creativity is fed using the animation tool, of Purple Mash. The tool of the 25th October is 2Animate -it provides the base, features that need further engagement with the idea of bringing pictures into life. We take an image -save it to our computer; then from a Youtube video we capture a screen shot -using the snipping tool: a cute baby monkey provides the base -it feeds it into our further work. We import the picture into all or one of the frames in the animation project. We then trace the outlines of the cute monkey and fill up with the paint bucket. 2Simple provides a whole plethora of educational features -in their Purple Mash website; these feed our educational dynamic, at Bryneven Primary -within it lies the 21st century educational being emphasized. This lesson promotes the idea that tools, technique and practice should feed the project -though its an introduction; we need to be exploring the scope of the tool; more fully- therein we express creativity -that might have not been initially have been perceived to be within our means. Bryneven presents Encapsulation with Purple Mash's 2Logo Coding class
Bryneven Primary offers the coding class -a bi-weekly lesson- on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the fourth term. Here, we promote Tuesday, October 15th 2019: a lesson on encapsulating (containing) our code in a procedure, and then calling a procedure that draws the main shapes. In procedures, we use lines of code to move the pen in a controlled manner. The main discussion of how robotics and human knowledge are related - with its logic, patterns, etc. It is like code that refers to the controls behind the natural movement of arms and legs (cybernetics). Cybernetics is widely used in the biological sciences: hence my link to brain connections - communication processes and control mechanisms. Here I am trying to make a rather brief comparison using processes - in essence, drawing an image - when introducing biological systems (brain and knowledge) and artificial (robotics), remember that participating students are from 8 to 11 years old. We use 2Logo Purple Mash to learn how various commands can be contained; suitably organized in accordance with well-appointed procedures. The lesson explores the repetition -using the square brackets with the sequence of commands- moving a pen. A procedure also engages with the pen up and pen down commands, which move and reposition the pen. Mr Bradley teaches for the Gauteng Department of Education.
