This *hot* trick can charge an EV battery in just 10 minutes

Electric cars could make a huge dent in the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. But they still make a tiny 2 percent of cars on the road today. A big speed bump they face is the hour or so it takes to charge. That could change, thanks to a new discovery by Pennsylvania State University researchers. They have come up with a technique to charge lithium battery in just 10 minutes for 200 to 300 miles of driving. An electric car that can be charged in the time it takes to fill a gas tank could jumpstart the EV market. “The…

Biosensor-equipped glasses could monitor diabetes through tears

Brazilian and US scientists have developed a glasses-based biosensor capable of measuring blood glucose levels through a person’s tears, offering a less invasive test for diabetics. Glucose levels need to be frequently monitored in people with diabetes, a disease that affects 62 million people in the Americas and 380 million worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), diabetes has been rising alarmingly in recent decades — with the fastest increase in low- and middle-income countries — and could affect 580 million people by 2035. Many people with the disease use a portable glycosometer to measure blood glucose levels by pricking their…

Amazon’s 2nd Gen Fire TV Cube is a great buy — if you don’t have the original

Amazon beefed up its Fire TV Cube with a few new hardware upgrades, refreshing it for the 2019 market. It’s undoubtedly better — but the changes are so incremental that if you have the original, it might not be worth your money to upgrade. Everything Tristan said about the original Fire Cube in his review still holds true — it’s a fantastic device, particularly if you don’t already have a smart assistant and want one that can do basically everything. Alexa connects to cable, music, and streaming platforms and the ability to simultaneously bark basic demands about the weather and be served a cornucopia of entertainment options is just too good. Playing with…

Bitcoin ransomware forces Spanish security firm Prosegur offline

Spanish multinational security firm Prosegur has been hit by Ryuk ransomware, the notorious Trojan virus that encrypts files on a compromised device and typically demands payment in Bitcoin to decrypt them. As a result of the attack, the company, which reportedly employs 170,000 people across the globe, has shut down its IT network and its employees were reportedly sent home. The firm, which is credited as being one of the world’s biggest provider of armored vehicles to transport cash, said on Twitter that it had taken “maximum security measures” to avoid propagating the ransomware both internally and externally. 3 ways EU’s new leadership will shape global tech

The General Data Protection Regulation was the European Union’s 2018 shot across the bow to the digital world. It tightened rules for companies storing user data and is the reason we were all inundated with opt-in emails from brands begging us to stay on their mailing list. The law also catapulted the EU into the center of the ongoing debate on how our free internet is governed. Since then, a storm has been brewing in Brussels. European politicians have bemoaned that GDPR did not go far enough to begin with and was outdated by the time it became law. The…

Victims lose $4.4B to cryptocurrency crime in first 9 months of 2019

It’s looking like a bumper year so far for cryptocurrency criminals. According to the latest CipherTrace report, losses from digital crime, in which cryptocurrency was the main haul, reached $4.4 billion over the first nine months of the year. It’s not even the end of the year yet, and this figure is already 150 percent up on the total money lost to cryptocurrency-related crime over the whole of 2018. Last year, just $1.7 billion was lost to digital currency crime. “The 150% increase in crypto theft and fraud reflects how criminals are adapting for bigger and better scores,” Dave Jevans…

Sea levels are rising more than expected, according to scientists

Sea levels rose 10 meters above present levels during Earth’s last warm period 125,000 years ago, according to new research that offers a glimpse of what may happen under our current climate change trajectory. Our paper, published today in Nature Communications, shows that melting ice from Antarctica was the main driver of sea-level rise in the last interglacial period, which lasted about 10,000 years. Rising sea levels are one of the biggest challenges to humanity posed by climate change, and sound predictions are crucial if we are to adapt. This research shows that Antarctica, long thought to be the “sleeping…

As much as I welcome multi-camera setups on modern smartphones, the trend does come with some caveats. Mainly, the ultrawide and/or telephoto sensors and lenses tend to kind of suck. The sixth mass extinction has already claimed its first victims: Humans

Nine human species walked the Earth 300,000 years ago. Now there is just one. The Neanderthals, Homo neanderthalensis, were stocky hunters adapted to Europe’s cold steppes. The related Denisovans inhabited Asia, while the more primitive Homo erectus lived in Indonesia and Homo rhodesiensis in central Africa. Several short, small-brained species survived alongside them: Homo naledi in South Africa, Homo luzonensis in the Philippines, Homo floresiensis (“hobbits”) in Indonesia, and the mysterious Red Deer Cave People in China. How to make your brand’s content people-centric

Content might be made up of words, pictures, code, and video. But good content is also made up of some kind of human connection, as well — it addresses a concern, taps into an emotion, or bonds through some sort of commonality. Content is created by people and for people (sorry, I think this is starting to sound very Abraham Lincoln-y), so people should always be at the forefront when deciding what to write about and how.  But how can you actually put that into action? Here are my favorite tactics. Highlight your employees Content should be people-centric, but let’s…

Facebook’s only fact-checker for Dutch news quits over political ad controversy

Yesterday, the Dutch digital newspaper, NU.nl, which was Facebook’s only partner, cut ties with the social network and published a blog post, written by Gert-Jaap Heokman, NU.nl’s editor-in-chief, questioning: “What is the point of fighting fake news if you are not allowed to tackle politicians?” The tech giant is currently operating without a third-party fact-checking service in the Netherlands over the continued dispute of allowing political ads to contain misinformation. However, Facebook insists it’s not an “appropriate role for us to referee political debates and prevent a politician’s speech from reaching its audience and being subject to public debate and…

Our DNA can now prove how (un)intelligent we are

It’s well known that some areas of the UK are poorer than others. These include Wales and northern Britain, which used to be coal-mining areas. Now we have discovered that these regional economic inequalities are in line with regional differences in DNA as well – with people becoming increasingly clustered by certain types of genetics. Genetic clustering has existed in all past societies. People have typically been relatively genetically similar to others nearby. But most of this was because of limited mobility. Before motorized transport, most people married and had children with someone else near to them. Combined with the…

Facebook allegedly blocked personal accounts of WhatsApp spyware maker’s employees

On Tuesday, eight employees from the Israel-based security company, NSOGroup, filed a lawsuit against Facebook in the Tel Aviv district court for blocking their accounts. The company said this was an independent action and it doesn’t concern its ongoing tussle with the social media giant regarding Pegasus spyware used to exploit WhatsApp. According to the lawsuit, on October 29, the social network blocked 100 Facebook and Instagram accounts. Many amongst them belonged to current and former employees of NSO Group and their family members. A statement released by representatives of these employees said Facebook‘s action is harmful and unjust. Blocking our…

Microsoft reveals how it caught mutating Monero mining malware with machine learning

Microsoft‘s antivirus and malware division recently opened the bonnet on a malicious mutating cryptocurrency miner. The Washington-based big tech firm revealed how machine learning was crucial in putting a stop to it spreading further. According to the Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection team, a new malware dubbed Dexphot has been infecting computers since last year, but since June 2019 has been burning out thanks to machine learning. Dexphot used a number of techniques such as encryption, obfuscation layers, and randomized files names, to disguise itself and hijack legitimate systems. If successful, the malware would run a cryptocurrency miner on the…

Let’s face it, the world is full of huge problems, and big challenges require matching interwoven ambitious solutions. Cooperation is the cornerstone upon which great achievements are built, and that starts with people who can identify and build bridges between stakeholders, enabling collaboration across disparate organizations. The 5G Open Innovation Lab, for example, is a new technology hub built in partnership with T-Mobile, the University of Washington and the City of Bellevue, Wash, will connect 5G startups with investors and technology labs to test their products.
